Miley Cyrus opens with her monologue stating that there will be “no twerking tonight.” Indeed, her performance of “We Can’t Stop” was a beautiful acoustic version with 3 guitars.
And her flawless performance didn’t there: her self-aware comedy was hilarious. The opening skit cuts to Miley backstage at the VMAs, where her former self emerges to try and talk her out of twerking. There’s terrific chemistry between Bayer and Cyrus, particularly when they recite the same lines in Bayer’s “Miley Cyrus Show” style. (“Omigod, it is like totally the morning and the birds are chirping and stuff like that, and I am like totally hungry and stuff like that, and I am obsessed with cereal!”)
Later on in the show, Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop” video is recast as a Republican anthem for the government shutdown. “This is our house, this is our rules.” “This is our party, we can do what we want.” Taran Killam works it as an androgynous John Boehner, while Miley portrays herself as a lascivious Michelle Bachman. Obama appears shocked as he witness the dance party that infiltrated the Whitehouse.
The Pentagon assembled out of freedom fries deserves to be noted for its amazingness.
