After an agonizing three-year wait for new music, Lorde is back and ready to get her spot back on the pop charts.
Green Light is the first single off her second album, Melodrama. The New Zealander showcases a complete 360 from the dark, broody bangers of her 2013 debut Pure Heroine. The unexpectedly uplifting song and its music video features Lorde recovering from having her heartbroken. She disses her ex for being unfaithful and a liar with lyrics like: “She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a damn liar.” She dances out her anger against a vibrant city skyline.
Lorde co-produced the song with Frank Dunes and Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. Anton off helped Taylor Swift on her Grammy-winning 1989 album. His anthemic production can be heard all over Lorde’s new song, but it’s still unlike anything anyone has done lately. The tempo changes throughout and the piano came out of nowhere but somehow fits the track perfectly. But it still has some Lorde staples including a wailing hook and heartfelt lyrics that made the Kiwi songstress a pop icon.
Lorde revealed to Zane Low on Beats 1 radio show that the song was written about her “first major heartbreak.”
It’s “about those moments immediately after your life changes and all about the silly little things you think about,” she said. “It sounds so heavy and the lyrics are so intense, and I thought, ‘How is this thing coming out so joyous-sounding?’ And I realized it was like, ‘This is that drunk girl at the party, dancing around, crying about her ex-boyfriend, that everyone thinks is a mess. That’s tonight and tomorrow, she starts to rebuild.’ ”
Melodrama is coming out in the summer. She will be appearing on Saturday Night Live on March 11th.
