The television industry spends $300-400 million on pilots. Of the 146 made this year, only 56 went to air.

Meanwhile, two seasons of his show ‘House of Cards’ was released all at once. It was wildly successful.

Netflix immediately knew that it would work from their data. Making the series seem really “cost effective” compared to traditional media.

Spacey says consumers are dying for stories. They want stories to be told when they want it, how they want it, in the format they prefer, and at a reasonable price. All of which Netflix offers.

If content creators deliver what the consumer wants, theft will go down. Which is arguably why people pirate content in the first place.

He says that, “we have learned the lesson that the music industry didn’t.”

I couldn’t agree more. It’s time for the television industry to make the changes necessary to compete in today’s market.
