Mike Pence, the Vice President of President-elect Donald Trump, attended the Broadway musical theatre show Hamilton. The hit show – which is sold out for the next 2 years – was a favourite of President Obama and it’s about colonial rebels shaping the future of an unformed country.
Pence arrived to the show with a mixture of cheering and booing as he took his seat in the Orchestral section of the theatre. When the show ended, the cast of Hamilton wanted to address Mr. Pence as he was making his way out of the theatre. The actor who plays Vice President Aaron Burr, Brandon Victor Dixon, asked him to stay for just a little longer so they can hear us out.
“We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”
The audience broke out in enthusiastic applause. But Trump said it was disrespectful.
“Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!”
“The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”
#BoycottHamilton began to trend on Twitter in defence of Mike Pence.
The actor replied, “@realDonaldTrump conversation is not harassment sir. And I appreciate @mike_pence for stopping to listen.”
