The Republican Presidential Debate on February 6th, 2016 was nothing short of iconic. Besides the botched intro, there were some pretty memorable statements.
A huge topic tonight was ISIS. Trump states Well four years ago I said bomb the oil and take the oil and if we did that they wouldn’t have the wealth they have right now. We actually have a case where we don’t want to bomb the oil because we don’t want to hurt, pollute the atmosphere… I would bring back waterboarding and I’d bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.”
Donald Trump also says we should give the police more respect: “The police in this country have done an unbelievable job of keeping law and order. We have to give great respect, far greater than we are right now, to our really fantastic police. There’s tremendous fraud, waste, and abuse in the veterans administration.”
Chris Christie gave some heartfelt statements on women: “Anything they can dream, anything that they want to aspire to, they can do. That’s the way we raise our daughters and that’s what we should aspire to as president for all the women in our country.”
Christie also addressed Marco Rubio and how his answers seem rehearsed: “When you’re president of the United States, when you’re governor of a state, the memorized 30 second speech when you talk about how great America is at the end of it, doesn’t solve one problem for one person, they expect you to plow the snow, they expect you to get the schools open, and when the worst natural disaster in your states history hits you, they expect you to rebuild their state which is what I’ve done, none of that stuff happens on the floor of the United States senate, it’s a fine job, I’m glad you ran for it, but it does not prepare you for President of the United States.”
Ted Cruz gave a very heartfelt statement on controlling drugs, relating it to a personal family member who died: “Bout 5 6 years ago, Marian died of an overdose. It was the coroner ruled it was accidental we don’t know, she went to sleep one night had taken too many pills and joey walked in and found her dead. This is an absolute epidemic. We need leadership to solve it.”
Cruz also attacked President Obama for negotiating with terrorists: “Putting in place legal regimes that encourage the payment of ransom has the effect of putting a bounty on other Americans. There’s a reason it has been long standing policy that we don’t negotiate with terrorists, we don’t pay ransoms. And the proper approach is a President and commander in chief that defends this country and that goes after goes after the terrorists rather than showing them weakness and encouraging them to target more Americans.”
