“The VMAs don’t just give you a stage, they give you a story. Some way of taking a fraction of a second and making it live forever,” Spears is heard saying in a voice-over. “Before you know it, it’s history. Before you know it, it’s Britney, bitch.”
Britney Spears is ready to make history at the VMAs.
9 years after her “Gimme More” performance that many people (except me) thought was disastrous, the living legend is taking the stage once more in 2016.
The singer will perform “Make Me” for the first time off her new album “Glory”. G-Eazy will join her on stage as well.
The singer announced the news on Facebook and Twitter today, writing “It’s not just a stage. It’s a story… MTV #VMAs August 28.” The video features an albino Burmese python slithering through her dressing room.
The snake cameo is a throwback to Spears’ iconic 2001 “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance where she danced with a python.
The first time she hit the VMA stage was in 1999 with NYSNC and it was boring. But the next year she came back and gave the most iconic performance ever. Dressed in a tuxedo, Spears sang the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” before tearing it off to reveal a nude bejeweled outfit and breaking into “Oops! … I Did It Again.”
In 2003, she was in a three-way kiss with Madonna and Christina Aguilera. Of course we all only cared about Britney’s kiss.
Spears didn’t perform again until September 2007. After leaving rehab in February, she shaved her head and attacked a photographer’s car with an umbrella. She returned to rehab after that incident. And when she came out, she performed in what was supposed to be her comeback but it was anything but.
Spears suffered a breakdown in January 2008 that required her to be hospitalized. She’s been living under the conservatorship of her father ever since.
Britney today seems happier than ever, and I am so stoked for her performance.
Also performing at this year’s award show is Rihanna, who is set to receive the Video Vanguard award.
