Azealia Banks Debuts “Chasing Time” Video, References Michael Jackson, TLC and Lil’ Kim

Azealia Banks Chasing Time

Azealia Banks is back with her debut album ‘Broke With Expensive Tastes.’ It was long awaiting with many setbacks. Her debut song ‘212’ was released in 2012. It propelled her to the top of the game, but she just couldn’t get it right with Universal Records.

She broke it off with Universal and released her album Beyoncé style. Her debut single is “Chasing Time” and the video was released today.

Her album is heavily influenced by 90s dance music. The video references directed by Marc Klasfeld references TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Janet and Michael Jackson’s “Scream.” In the video she dresses up in a half body suit with a pasty covering her nipples – like Lil’ Kim – and drops some house choreography (which I have to learn).

The song feels like it’s about a romantic relationship gone bad. But Banks penned it right before she broke off her deal with Universal Records.

I can say that this feels like a departure from her previously released tracks. It’s a lot more dance-y and vocal heavy. I will have to wait and see if this grows on me. Nonetheless I am really intrigued by the album and will have to give it a good listen!
